“The Last of the Iconoclasts” was inspired by 18-year-old Erika because of a controversial piece that see did for her school art show. The picture depicts Christ on the cross, but attached to him are a series of lines that lead up to a puppeteer looking down with a sinister grin on his face. The piece caused extreme reactions, with quite a few people calling for its removal and was almost pulled from the schools display, but several of the faculty members pushed to have it kept in the show, supporting the freedom of expression. Like any other show night on a Saturday, the anticipation was buzzing as soon as we entered the Tucson city limits. Coming from Phoenix, the ways of the local metal heads always seemed to interest me, and I thought what better way to see them in their natural element than go to the “I Hate” Festival. This event also happened to take place the same day as the Earth Day parade, so traffic was a burden until we managed to find the small side alley that lead to the oh so famous “The Rock.”
